It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for starting a for-profit business.

One possible exception is for companies developing or exporting agricultural goods, including food and forest product. Another exception could be the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs http://www.sba.gov/aboutsba/sbaprograms/sbir/index.html , which fund the research and development of technological innovation that meets specific government needs.

Your best bet actually will be from the states if they offer grant programs for women (or any other special interest groups — minorities, women, disabled, veterans, etc). Or check with non profit organizations, particularly women organizations if they offer grants. Examples include

In 2011, PPI purchased and extensively rehabbed the property. Built in 1991, the community was originally developed by Lake Forest, Ill.-based luxury homebuilder Residential Homes of America.

We saw great potential in this property as a high-performing rental property investment and used our extensive rehab and renovation expertise to transform it into a community with the modern amenities and sophistication its residents expect and demand, said Barbara J. Gaffen, co-CEO of Prime Property Investors. The property is a rarely available and highly sought-after North Shore garden-style apartment community. It is ideally located along a major job corridor in the north suburbs, which provides a steady stream of quality tenants.

According to Gaffen, PPI decided it was an ideal time to offer the community for sale due to the current high demand by investors for quality apartment communities with solid and steady cash flows. Additionally, the Deer Valley community is offered free and clear of any debt, allowing a buyer to take advantage of today’s historic low interest rates for multifamily investment properties, she said.

Jeannine Beasley collects pillow cases. At first, collecting pillow cases seems like an odd hobby, but for Jeannine, its a calling to help others.

Last Christmas, Jeannine, who is an employee at Glass Doctor of Central Carolina located in Dunn, N.C., asked fellow church member and U.S. service member Rhonda Henderson, who was serving in Kuwait, what she could send to help troops.

Henderson told her pillow cases. The hospitals in Kuwait are stocked with sheets and blankets, but no pillow cases for wounded soldiers.

So Jeannine started Operation Pillow Talk, a community effort to collect pillow cases with inspirational bible verses and quotes written by children and adults on them for wounded U.S. soldiers.

“If I had my head on a pillow case with all these uplifting words from communities back home, I’d feel inspired,” Beasley said.

It started as an effort within her own church, but Beasley took it to her boss, Glass Doctor franchise owner and veteran Jim Johnson, who encouraged her to bring pillowcases to customers and use the shop as a drop-off point.

Jeannine told me about the pillow case project, and I thought it was such a great idea that I offered to pay shipping on the pillow cases collected at our office, Johnson said.

As Beasley continued her efforts, local businesses began offering to serve as drop-off points, as well as pay for shipping the items collected at their business. Shes even been asked to speak at local churches and schools about the collection.

When you see the pictures and notes children write, it makes you smile, and you know itll make the soldiers smile too, Beasley said.

One of the best parts, she says, is that its a cost-efficient way to help soldiers, with pillow case two-packs being sold for less than five dollars.

Its a small price with a big impact, she said.
